Bends reduce draw. Your air intake sounds too low.I read some where on line there is a minimum length of the flue and a bend or two helps it draw.... Was on one of the log burner sites..
The 5 " flue on my Morso Squirrel in my narrowboat is only 1.5 metres including the chimney. No problems with the draw, I can get a flame shooting out the top if necessary.
When would it ever be necessary to get flames out of the top of a chimney on a narrowboat ? I can honestly say I have never looked at a narrowboat and thought "What that needs is some flames coming out of the chimney, it would really liven the canal up "
Lack of imagination.
That looks like a place I used to work...except for the on fire bit of course. Let me guess. Wooden boat, cooking on a paraffin stove....

I worked in a swamp in Southern Sumatra many moons ago. I saw wooden houses go up all the time, but they seemed a bit more careful with the boats!Album cover for "Smoke on the Water" From the look of the palms I'd say it was somewhere tropical.
