until the variator goes wrong
you mean until someone who may not know which is the correct oil to put in one just fills it up and ruins it, the truth is a variator ,well that oil is 140 quid for 10 litres and it only works with that oil ATF is found in many and is one of the reasons for a lot of failures, but the price of the oil well you can see why people skimp and bugger things up, at David brown gears we used lots of variators in gearboxes and cone drives and theyre pretty bullet proof (foolproof they are not because of the fool element )
I have a chippie here which is for sale now with its original variator e in it and when we stripped it to check the balls they were still round (no flat spots) no surface degredation and no wear on the pressure cages
The VFD thing falls down slightly in use , it matters not now its over on sale at homeworkshop as i just upgraded to a brand spanking CNC lathe , simply dont have the room for it now and i will cry when that chippie leaves the building but sure i can store it, would be a complet e bloody waste of a
Myfords are great for doing lots of things well up to a certain size with relative precision if thats your thing in all honesty a chipmaster is only slightly bigger capacity wise but its got so much more mass to it if you do want to take big cuts it will destroy bars in minutes
nowever a chipmaster in good nick will also give you surface finishes which are borderline ground with carbide and correct feeds and speeds
downside is spare parts are harder to come by and chippies that are knackered despite delusional owners saying its got plenty of life in it are more common than good machines Myfords, theres a bazillion people selling spares and you can get a shedload of those parts second hand
