furthest I care to do work is less than 5 miles --radius any further and I'm selective to what the job is . on cal;louts I'm well paid and will travel 70 miles
Have you started at your new place ?that hasnt happened yet...yet...the mrs has just got a new job, starting monday, 16.6 miles form the house so one of our main priorities now is a replacement car
Have you started at your new place ?
Sorry pal, no I didn'tdid you not see on my thread about it...they offered me a pathetically low hourly rate, £2.53 less than im on now...
Sorry pal, no I didn't
Ive spent approximately twenty years commuting from Northeast Manchester, Oldham Rochdale area to South Manchester, Stockport and Sale. A long journey I know.
Likewise there's the smart motorway scheme for M60 / M62 not sure how much good that will do either. At least money is being spent on transport infrastructure and it keeps me in work.
It's alright if you can be that selective and there's plent of work on your doorstepfurthest I care to do work is less than 5 miles --radius any further and I'm selective to what the job is . on cal;louts I'm well paid and will travel 70 miles
As a retired person I can please myself when and where I go. I generally walk to the shops and buy daily needs. I try to avoid weekends and do whatever I want in the week when its quieter. I'm starting to dislike weekends a lot. I don't like the crowds in the pubs and often walk in the woods but at weekends there are other people with their stupid dogs.
I also try to avoid the 7am-9am and the 4pm-6pm if I can.
I've turned into a Grumpy Old Man........so the neighbour's wife says.
that's just in case u didn't-look properly in the 1st -post they had to spell it outAm I seeing double?
One plus of being a carer...I don't have to commute (Well unless the hospital decides to schedule an appointment at 9am for some stupid reason...cue 30 minute trip turns more into 75 minutes)
Worst drivers round here are (in order)
The distantly retired (top speed 20mph)
Anyone driving anything agricultural (no one else exists and often they take up 1/2 my lane also due to width)
Council workers just pre-lousing time (how slow and how much of a roundabout road can we take back to the depot)
Recently retired / "the economisers" - max speed 40mph and they will do their damndest to stop anyone overtaking inc swerving...
Mothers with kids (no one else exists again, "touch parkers" and maneuvre at random
Reps / Middle managers - I need be there yesterday and I drive big powerful car so I'll do 100mph everywhere and run with main beams constantly on)
New car drivers (is no dealership capable of aiming headlights anymore? Seemingly not given that most cars fail the first MOT on "clearly wrongly aimed headlights - BOTH too high") too worried about their paintwork and will swerve to avoid the slightest bit of moisture on the road..
Days I wonder if Kellogs are running a "free driving licence with every box" promotion....
I'm beginning to sound like my old man...
I cycle over 6000 miles a year, a lot of that back and fore work. I actually cycle more miles than I drive through lifestyle choice. I Don't want to get into the car v cyclist debate, but I'm one less car on the road every day. Its a shame some drivers don't realise this when they sit in traffic getting angry with everything and every body in their vicinity. Its surprising the observations you can make in traffic from a bike.....
Our little island has "x" amount of space on the roads which were primarily designed in the early part of the last century when cars were rare and a fraction of the size of todays mobile entertainment devices. My solution would be to TAX the hell out of domestic motoring, seems strange as I am a 2 x car household!!! Tax calculated as the amount of space your car occupies x the weight of the vehicle x the amount of seats you've got, minus a factor for the the amount of occupants in the vehicle per journey. There must be big brother software that can do this these days???
Too many vehicles in too little a space, big 4x4's, 7 seat people carriers, SUV's, Audi Q7's BMW X5 whatever's, the list is endless, all too big and uneccesary all ferrying one person up the shops/school/tesco express and back !!!
I you live on a farm or drive off-road, get a 4x4. If you have a family of 7 kids get a people carrier, If you have huge inflated..... massive ego and need a bright white 4x4 with a 4litre engine wand 21" wheels.....get a life or get off the road you're taking up too much space
