When you said that you machined the old bearing outer for clearance, how did you do it? It would be rock hard wouldn't it?
I'd never have thought about welding the old bearing to get it to shrink

In the olden days when I used to spend my days being a mechanic, I used the outer race to push the new bearings in, and to prevent them getting jammed in the housing, I'd slice through them with a cutting disc - a 3mm one coz that's all we had in them days. I think I've still got a box of them in the garage somewhere.
Nice idea using the lathe to reduce the size though - didn't know you could turn down a bearing!
that torch you used looks interesting, just propane ?
any idea's on make of it etc ?
i could get away with one of them...
