Hi all,
Thanks for help getting me set up with a first MIG welder. I now have rust to cut out and panels to start fitting on my project (Renault 5 GT Turbo). I have a few questions about prep and finish of welds.
1. The metal I am welding is very thin mild steel. First thing I need to do is find and cut out rust. Can anyone recommend me a grinder attachment that will take off paint and rust to give me clean bare metal without damaging the metal too mush? I don't want to charge in with the wrong attachment. A link to the kind of attachment would be much appreciated. Are there other attachments for getting right in to corners etc? Maybe a drill attachment is better for this?
2. I will be cutting out most of the sills and some of the floor. Floor needs patches, sills will be replaced with new. In both cases I can find guides on the welding needed, but what is the best treatment immediately after welding? I am planning to let it cool, then grind off proud bits of weld, then use the attachment in my first question to clean up the area. The critical thing is what coating I apply to this fresh bare metal? I will be finishing the car fairly slowly as lots needs doing so a full respray won't happen for a while. The coating has to protect the weld from corrosion pretty well.
3. If I cut out lots of rust to begin with, but don't necessarily weld new bits in straight away, is there a different coating I should use that is more weld-friendly whilst still offering corrosion protection?
Tips much appreciated, especially with specific links/products.
Many thanks!
Richard
