Hi All,
I am new to the forum. Have read many interesting articles on here prior to purchasing my SIP welder. It's a SIP Autoplus 211 dp. I know the cheaper SIPS are causing people issues. I guess this is not so cheap so I had hoped for better luck.
I also thought it would be the best for my roof panel replacement project. (My Ford mondeo was written off by a falling tree last year)
Anyhow I have a non wire feed related issue.
I switch the welder on, with gas and wire feeding correctly and on the lowest setting 1! After a few 2second -3second presses of the trigger smoke begins to come from the welder case. I have not attempted any welds yet... just familiarising myself and 'commissioning' it.
The only thing I can think is that it is brand new and eventually it will stop smoking. However my initial reaction is to unplug it, remove the 20L gas bottle and run!
I have since taken both covers off to see. Last time I tried I did hear a gentle hiss which I thought would be a blown capacitor. But the larger CAPS (6 of them) look fine. The transformer is odd though. It's huge! The steel plates appear to be painted black or have black gunk on them. A thin layer of metal seems to be separating from the base support of the transformer due to heat perhaps. Aside from this I don't see anything else but afraid to use it.
Any ideas / suggestions?
Should I return it or persevere? More afraid it will burst into a ball of flames to be honest!
PS: The manual says the working temp of the transformer is 180C! So my opinion is whatever gunk/paint was put on the transformer is going to burn off. I doubt I got it up that hot with just a few minutes of tests. I did not weld anything!
