Hi all,
I'm Si, 25 and in the RAF in North Yorkshire (my nickname is Frodo, hence the username!). I've spent a long time surfing the forum as a guest, but bought myself my first welder today so figured that its time to join!
My hobby is racing cars, but I've always wanted to restore a car so recently bought an old MG Midget that needs a bit of welding...
And when I say 'a bit', its been off the road longer than I've been alive! So should be enough to keep me busy. Machine Mart in Darlington had a VAT-free day today, so I got off my backside and bought a Clarke 135TE (I would have bought from Weldequip had MM not done that, but rest assured I'll be getting a decent auto darkening helmet from him soon).
Having just spent an hour in the garage playing with my new toy on some offcuts:
a) I definitely don't like welding one handed!
b) I realise why everyone says that your welding position is so important
and c) the videos on here are definitely helpful when it comes to sorting out your technique and judging the quality of the weld by the sound.
Apart from attempting a weldathon on the Midget, I would eventually like to cut up an old caravan and turn it into a car transporter. And if I need to do any welding on my race car, I'd like to give it a go myself.
Frodo
PS My other toy (the red Pug) in action at Brands Hatch back in April:
