Hello...
New to the forums.
I'm doing lots of reading and im looking to take my time planning this project.
have not used a welder since learning to arc weld during my apprenticeship (20 years ago).
I'm a recent convert to the sport of owner/driver karting and very very much enjoying it.
I have a small utility trailer that is fairly old and will cope but i'm thinking this would be an excellent project.
this is a (rough) diagram of the current trailer.
The tow bar and axle are made out of fairly solid 50mm box section.
the frame is made out of angle iron which is 2 or 3mm thick.
there are solid wood planks that cover the floor and all sides.
All together she is fairly robust and tows very well for a small unit.
one of the issues i have is that the width and length of the kart are larger than the trailer as it currently is.
Current size is 1220mm (4ft long) and 920mm (3ft) wide.
Kart is 1800 long and 1400 wide.
refreshed trailer needs to be around 1900mm long and 1450mm wide.
My idea (and i accept that im a total novice).
was to remove the angle iron to leave the tow bar and axle in place and then to build a new frame to sit sit on top.
Such as
THis would allow me to keep my current tow bar and axle (hence it is not a new build so avoids some rules about new trailers needing approval), But the frame looks a bit like its going to be somewhat complex. the space between the wheels is not dead space as my kart trolley fits in there perfectly.
i would use the top space for box/spares/tools. and then the kart would sit on a flat (hinged top).
its a long term project so looking to gain the advice and wisdom of people before i even purchase my mig welder.
