As I plan to work my 1948 Ferguson TE20 tractor harder in the coming year I thought I ought to change the gearbox/transmission/lift oil.
Last time I changed it (about 10 years ago!) I used a Tractor Universal Oil, 15/30 or similar and I noticed that the Hydraulics would drop on me when carrying the plough or link box at the highest position when travelling on the road.
The recommended oil is SAE40 engine oil which seems to be twice the price of the Tractor Universal Oil.
Is there much difference between the thicknesses of the 2 oils, could that be the cause of the lift arms dropping?
Or do I have to bite the bullet and strip down the lift pump and cylinder, I would prefer not to as most of the time the hydraulics are fine!
Has anyone overhauled the hydraulics on a Fergie?
Also any suggestions where I could get 25L of SAE40 at a reasonable price.
