Following on from my Viva thread that's doing nothing because of time and weather, we have this. It's my girlfriend's ex-daily that came off the road over 6 months ago because it decided to stop running. Long story short the plan was to quickly get it running and flog it, as that didn't happen and she 'maybe, possibly, I don't know' wants to keep it we decided to do a 'quick tidy up resto' to get rid of the now very visible rust and as many of the dents as we could.
You'd think I would have learned by now that 'quick tidy up restos' don't work, especially when the car is outside and when the owner refuses to spend any money on the thing.
As it stands today the car runs a bit, I've taken the rust off the front end, started some 'welding', made my first few repair sections and beaten a few of the dents out.
Now I need help, I plugged a hole with a pool of weld on the A-panel and it all went fine. But the first repair section I tried to weld into the wing didn't go well at all. The repair fits well and sits flush, but I kept blowing holes in it, very very quickly. I've been through the set up guide on here and from it have the welder set to it's lowest setting, so I'm not really sure where I'm going wrong. It's blowing through very very quickly, could this just be what's left of the wing is too thin? On the other hand on the same section I managed to get some good clean welds with good penetration, so I'm lost.
No hole (that one's supposed to be there!) It welded up nicely and finished off so you can't see it.
Problem area before the repair
Repair panel
Even just tacking it in it was blowing holes. I left a bit of time before each one and alternated sides to keep temperatures down
Continued on and wasn't having a good time of it
Ground it all back so I could see where all the holes were etc.
Tried welding again but again it was just blowing holes so gave up for the day. Frustrating.
Help please!
