Hi , i am collecting info and tools etc to soon start the repair of my jaguar xjs floor. The floor is of approx 0.8 or 0.9mm sheet metal and i have cut the rusted metal out and am looking into making some small patches to weld in to the floor. I have a new welder which looks good so far (esab caddy 200i) and just got a speedglas helmet and have just ordered a 0.6mm reel of wire and torch tip to go with it. The sheet is of the same thickness which is also 08 or 0.9mm and the first patch i made has a step around it to let the patch in the hole and enable me to seam weld the edge of the patch. I have not done any welding to the floor yet and thinking about making a patch to butt weld in stead ? I know butt weld is harder but if i can do this i think it would be a better job as i could clean the joints after and treat the weld to prevent rust. The question i have is that i have just got some small welding clamps which has a thin sheet conecting the two sides of the clamp together. The thickness of this plate in the clamps is also approx the same as the sheet for the floor and if i were to use these it would mean i would have to cut the patch 0.8 mm smaller all rould the inside of the hole where the patch is fitting.
The question is with the patch clamped and a 0.8mm gap all around the pathch to the floor , after tack welds would the 0.9mm gap be too large to weld with a curved action of the torch ? Or would it be better to weld the type of patch that i made first with a step around the edge. I made the step with a tool that i think is called a joggler ? Thanks for all your help . These patches cant be sean but i still like to do the jobs as best as i can as i do not rush them.
