With my Garage Workshop full of parts and tools which are useful, but not for 'todays' project, I often set up the Workmate outside, within reach of the ex-BOC welder.
The problem comes when I move round the workpiece to get into the 'best' position for the next weld. Sometimes the sun is shining on the workpiece, but sometimes the sun is behind me, and as I get into position the sun lights up the inside of the helmet / visor.
The end result is that visibility is severely reduced. After the arc has created I can see the point of weld, but cannot see enough of the surrounding area to follow the join line. I use an auto darkening visor, which has a control on the side, graduated from 8 to 13. I understand this controls the amount of darkness, with 8 providing the most visibility, and 13 the least. I have mine set at 8.
Should I be looking to do my welding in controlled conditions, ie, inside?
Should I be looking for some sort of overcap large enough to contain both visor and head, preventing the backlighting from the sun?
How do people doing construction work in the open air manage?
Any other useful suggestions?
I am an occasional hobby welder, and that may, of course, be the biggest problem, as a month or more can elapse between welding sessions.
Thankyou.
