Hi all,
New to the forum so if my question is in the wrong place than my apologies.
See if any of you can help me with the following.
I am working on my jeep as it had rust on the rear chassis rails. So bad that there were holes in the chassis rails. I have cut away he offending sections and only got half a chassis rail over at each side. Unfortunately this has started to rust as well and I think that I am down to 3/4 thickness on the remaining metal.
Been in contact with nearly every breaker in the country to find a chassis which fits my car (Nissan Patrol 1998). If I find one I will remove the rear chassis rails and swap them with my car. But until now no luck. Hence why I am looking in strengthening the material I have got left.
Came up with the following plan. Make a plate which fits on the inside of the chassis rail, cut a bunch of holes in it and plug weld the plate to the remaining metal. Once it is plug welded I will then weld the circumference in a continuous weld. Obviously two plates together is not ideal and I will have to find a way to stop the rust between the two plates.
Any opinions on this?
CEJM
P.S. Photo's will follow when I start welding.
