Hi I stumbled accross this site while trawling the internet for information on buying a Mig welder. It great lots of good information but it is a bit hard tring to work out whether the brands discussed are available in Australia. I am looking for a welder that can be used on car panels up to 3 - 4mm I suppose. I have a good inverter arc welder if I need to weld bigger stuff then than. I like the idea of welding with gas but the cost of hiring bottles of gas seems very high here so I think I will mostly be welding gassless. My budget is about $1000 Australian.... but as with everything I buy I tend to always go for overkill and would spend more if there was something much better for a little more (ie $2-300 more)! It just takes a bit more creativity to get it past the procurement commitee (read wife!).
My questions are:
What brands would you suggest? I've been looking at Cigweld 165 & 175i, Unimig 190, Lincolm 180c, BOC Magmate 180p and 200.
How important/worthwhile is it to find something with a Euro torch connection?
5kg vs 15kg wire spool size - 15kg spools are so much better value than 5kg ones. Are there any disadvantages to large spools? Do people buy 15kg ones and rewind their empty 5kg ones?
Any comments or suggestions would be appreciated.
Thanks
