Try using the end of the shroud to cover the arc itself, that takes the real bright point away and lets you see more information around the weld area itself, leaving the light to illuminate the work area. Hard to describe but tyr it and you should see what I mean.
Also use chalk to highlight the weld, not to much as it can eventually make the arc unstable, how do I know this? after a lot of head scratching.
