Our Sony TV is 2 years old and has developed a screen fault.
Its the third Sony in 5 years two screen faults and one power issue, so should I just buy a different brand or keep relying on the John Lewis 5 year warranty?
Sonys are usually pretty good so it sounds like you have a particular model that has an issue. If there have been that many problems then a change would be a valid option. However you do not state I its the same model each time. Also its been different failures so you could just be unlucky.
What is the screen fault?
When TVs had tubes a Sony was always the way to go but I must admit every time I've looked at them since everyone had a flat screen they've seemed a bit lacking.
We have 3 TVs in the house and they are all Toshibas, only ever had one issue and it was when an automatic update goosed the first one we had. Toshiba sent out a card that fitted in the CAM slot. Powered the TV on and it updated the firmware and fixed it.
None of ours are top end units, we use them entertainment we don't need to count how many hairs someone has in their beard.
Only critism on the latest one is the TV guide interface is a bit clunky but we rarely watch aerial supplied content these days.
All of ours came from Costco so have the same 5 year warranty as John Lewis.
We have a Samsung 42" led TV , pretty old we got for free when our Nordmende failed .
We also got an LG led TV which lasted for about 10 years without a problem till it failed.
I can't really help in this thread I'm not a technological guy .
PS3 and smartphone are already enough for my standards
I think you've been very unlucky.
When buying a new tv you now need to check the tv for dead pixels etc. A few on amazon complaining of this on your tv. The main problem with them was netflix crashing etc.
All tvs give problems now, especially smart ones. Even a firestick can outperform a smart tv with streaming etc.
I wish tvs would concentrate on picture and sound and really responsive guides etc and leave the smart stuff to an added box.
Is their any Richer Sounds stores near you? They give 6 years warranty and are hard to beat on price. I even think they price match, they probably sell online too
My dad's last TV was a Toshiba, packed in 1 month out of warranty (just bought from Argos), I googled common faults, found the likely board, ordered a second hand one of ebay for £30 and still going 4 years later.
I am really happy with LG my last one is still used by my brother and is 10 years old and has a great picture, my current 55" OLED has been faultless (I buy from Richer sounds for the warranty).
Sony are a good brand, i've purchased well over 100 in the last couple of years (I install audio visual systems) Since moving their operating system to Android it's got better still.
Their 2020 models are particularly good as they are one of the few manufacturers that have increased specs of even the mid range models when some other manufacturers have reduced them to keep costs down. I don't use Sony exclusively but it's definitely my preferred choice at the moment. Having said that, like all electronics they are not totally infallible and i've had a few go wrong, but they have all been their 75" model so I put it down to a bad batch or production run. Since swapping them they have been solid.
Well just been looking and my head hurts.
Currently on hold for John Lewis re replacement, The repair company called to say it needs to be replaced as Sony don't replace panels, didn't even come to view?
Problem now is trying to arrange this.
