I saw a good example of this about a year after passing my test. A vehicle with absolutely zero crumple zones vs a relatively modern hatchback. Result was hatchback wasn't any taller than the cylinder head. Everything else above there was either crushed or knocked off.I think the crash tests fail to tell the whole story, I saw one where they threw a smart car at the front of an old Volvo. Probably two tons vs 3/4 of a ton, same thing that the Volvo sustained more damage but fail to say the Volvo carried on at 40mph where the Smart car did 40mph to stop and 0-40mph backwards in a millisecond, thats enough to detach your head from your body and for it to be rolling around in the road. They are also partial to a corner to corner test vs a proper head on, the results would be very different.
