We have a 101 ambi. I bought it as a single chap, and now, 20 years or so later, i have a partner and young daughter.
We have not been away in the 101 since our daughter was born for two reasons -
a) the third "seat" is in the rear, with a bulkhead between the cab and that seat, so unsuitable
and
b) on the 101, there is 2mm of alluminium sheet between your legs and whatever you are crashing into
Issue A can probably be sorted by moving the rear seat to above the engine (which is between the front two seats at present)
Issue B....?
Im thinking there is more to roll cages than just welding up some tube. Im thinking that a bad one may be worse than no cage at all?
Im not actually too worried about "rolling" - i mean the thing is fairly unstable, but i saw a video of one roll once, and the top actually stayed looking pretty good. Im more bothered by forward impact.
Nothing is going to make it perfect. A cage isnt going to add a crumple zone. But is there anything much that i can do?
This is the vehicle, on a french campsite, before children came into the picture -
