Well after getting all the answers to my questions, and thinking about it for long enough, I started removing the landing wall today.
Yesterday was spent propping it up with Acros on (and under) stairs. The alternative of having to block the landing with props (and the living room below), and potentially install the beam from the stairs was worse I felt.
Then today I started removing some brickwork. Taking my time as it's a small space, boiling hot (with all the bedroom doors closed), and access up the stairs is narrow even before the props went in. Carrying buckets of bricks up and down is great fun .... not.
I'll leave the plasterboard skin on the stairs side for as long as possible to minimise dust downstairs.
Also taking care of my back. There is no rush to get it done, so can take a few weeks if needs be.
Ordered the Oak (post and beam) yesterday.
I think it will open up the landing nicely
