I am painting a pre-war car, starting with the petrol tank which is strapped to the rear. I have begun stripping the many layers of paint using paint-stripper and poly-discs. When I get down to bare metal I can see evidence of rust pitting. This was not showing on the surface, which was in generally good condition.
The pits are quite extensive and are full of old paint. I really don't want to remove enough metal to eliminate them. However, without removing the paint from the pits I can't see how a rust converter would work. Can I just go ahead and prime, hoping that the old paint in the pits will continue to do it's job?
The plan is to use a high-build etch primer then cellulose.
