Thanks for that. Maybe I will get one after all.
it would work extremely well for 35mm cabinet door hinge recesses.
its one of the main uses i'm planning for mine.
although the depth stop is a bit... *meh*
Saw they have the old style 500w bench drills next week and I still need to get something. Any good? Anyone know what taper they use, as I'd swap the chuck for keyless

That is disappointing, I have sat in a dark corner of the garage the older version of the Lidl pillar drill I happily replaced it with the Meddings I was practically given but I would not say they were that bad.I got one, set up but not drilled anything yet, quality... pushing the limits of what I can accept, it might go back, or get some upgrades.
First thing are the spindle bearings easy to swap? Quite a bit of noise and vibration from them or something as the quill is lowered. If its easily fixed I will keep it.
The S2 15min rated motor runs hot after only couple minutes, appears to take ages to cool.
Good points the motor does seem like a real 500w with some torque, and assembled it has a suprising amount of rigidity for the weight.
What I dont like:
The base column mounting face is questionable. Every part needs deburring
The tube is pressed into a lightweight turned aluminium hollow casting ring, not sure if tube is pressed square.
Brake cleaner melts the paint off.
The head slops onto the column with quite a lot of play. Secured with two grubs. Starting to doubt if it will get square holes.
The head is a welded plate construction with steel inserts so There is no reason for the column bore to be such a bad fit.
The belt cover locking bracket is bent so the bolt does nothing.
The belt cover safety switch.. I can touch the belt before its raised enough to cut the motor. Its not far out but for a UK shop sold item I am suprised. The bolt has a shoulder so no adjustment without putting a washer in there.
I notice that unlike every other chinese item, there are no quality control stickers, might be why..
It means the tool has been made to last a certain time by cutting back on the quality, compared to a top brand that has been made to last multiple times longer. You can't substitute a Homebase own brand grinder for a Hitachi one and expect the same life span.Thing is, I've heard it said that this tool or that tool is no good for industrial or professional use. Often that means being totally abused by people with no clue how to either use or look after tools.
Nothing will stand up to repeated abuse and poor handling for long.
