We planned to tile an area of floor in our cottage to cover the hallway, the downstairs loo and the kitchen (all flow from the hallway so if the doors are open are one floorspace). The floor is currently 2x8 tongue and groove MDF sheets with carpet or vinyl on top.
I am always a little dubious about tiling onto MDF surfaces and we have recently found that some important pipework runs underneath portions of the floor. As a result, I am worried about covering it with such a permanent covering as ceramic tiles (in case it ever needs to be lifted). I would like a hard wearing cottage like finish though.
Has anyone pine laid floorboards (not T&G) on top of chipboard floor and simply fastened them down with screws? Easy to remove, can sand and wax which would be a reasonable finish with a cottage feel? The space from the edge of the door frame to the top of the chipboard is 1.5 inches, so the depth of a floorboard would work.
Could this work or will it be a bad finish?
