This vice came with a milling machine I recently acquired, looks to be in reasonable condition and would be ideal for the size of machine I have, only problem, fixed jaw was missing.
I've made a new jaw from oil hardening ground plate. My worry is that the hardening process will distort the new jaw.
All I was going to do to harden it was to get it cherry red and drop it in a tub of old sump oil then stick it in the oven at 200 deg to temper.
What is the likelihood of the plate coming out flat, and is there anything I can do to minimise distortion or should I leave it soft and accept that is has a limited life.
I don't have any access to surface grinding and I guess this would be way to hard to machine with HSS.
Would be grateful for any advice and guidance.
