I have a Belle generator which has a Honda GX160 engine. I bought this new in 1998 but have rarely used it and most of the time it just gets a start and run for a while. The last time I went to use it, with some fresh petrol, it started very easily as it always has done but as soon as it gets warm enough to come off choke, it started to cough and then backfire and die. Thinking it might have got some stale fuel residue in the carb, I stripped this and checked everything was clear which it was. I'm now at a loss as can't think what else it could be. I would add that the backfires are really loud, just like a rifle shot (keeps the neighbours guessing) but not with any visible flame from the exhaust. Generally, it looks in good order and belies its age so I would really like to get it back into working order. Any ideas / similar experiences?
Thanks.
