Hello, I am extending the legs of a stand. The legs are 1" angle iron. I have made the extended legs from 1.5" angle iron. I have clamped them together, one inside the other, so there is an 8" overlap. All the surfaces have been cleaned with a flap disc. Sealey Turbo 170 mig, argon/CO2 gas mix at 10 L/min, power setting on 5. New reel of wire fitted last October, no signs of rust.
I can weld two or three inches then the arc stutters, goes pop, pop, pop for a few seconds and the weld goes to pot. If I stop and then immediately re-start, back to normal.
Sometimes when I start the weld it does the stuttering then calms down and welds fine.
What am I doing wrong?
