Sounds like belt & braces to me!I'm paranoid, I use insulated crimps but then heat shrink over tail and cable
Is there an actual benefit to this compared to using insulated ones or is it just a personal preference thing?

the crimps aren't heat shrink but he puts heat shrink sleeving over them ok on barrel conectors not much use on spade conectorsSounds like belt & braces to me!

I must have been bodging for the last 47 years then never had one fail yet and there's still time british standards cant of noticed anyone using themThe pre-insulated ones I have live in a box labelled "Bodgers' Crimps"...
