On the bike forums there's a lot of talk about using Harpic to clean up stainless exhaust pipes... and it does, to a point, but leave it on too long and you get some nasty staining. I used it on a pair of Honda silencers I'd bought as spares, but the one that caught the splashes from the first now has spots where it looks rusty.
Also, in a moment of genius I decided to try the Harpic on my stainless kitchen sink which, luckily, is donkey's years old and would have been replaced by now if the finances hadn't gone to rats a couple of years back... anyway, after leaving it on for about 30 seconds and then washing off, the sink has all the colours of the rainbow in it and I'd swear the surface is perhaps slightly textured - and Solvol won't restore it, I've tried. So use with care...
You wont bring it back to shiny with chemicals, it needs polishing with a mop, something like this kit, felt pads and polishing soap, I also have a 2" dia one that fits in a power drill which is handy for small areas,
