Don't forget, once a machine has been written off on the books, it's got no value. So you can either have a known contractor (who no doubt is or was your day to day waste metal remover) come in and safely lift it and dispose of it, probably giving you a certain value from it's weight - so everything goes quickly, reliably, through the usual channels - no real extra cost to the company.
Or you can have Dave/Steve/Rupert's mate come in, maybe, Tuesday next, with his under-specced trailer, two argos luggage straps, and have several people tied up helping him to try to load it with company equipment that's now not earning it's keep doing what it was bought for, and fingers crossed, no-one gets injured, nothing gets damaged and you can finally use the space for something else . . . and if someone does get injured, the amount of paperwork, the HSE forms that have to be filled in - and if HSE come visit, send you letters, ring you up, in-fact do anything related to it, they will charge you a decent amount per hour for their time - it's just not worth the risk. Never mind the news report in the local press - that means every other time the company appears in the press, it's not "award winning local company gains new order", its "leg-lost company gains new work despite appalling H&S record . . ."
As a benefactor of euipement disposal in a previous life in earlier times, I too find it annoying when good stuff is scrapped, but I understand why.
