Would I be shot down if I said French cars rust less?
yup, everything works perfectly and at a quarter of a million miles on it, thats not bad goingBut does the heater work, mine didn't.
Not quite what the manual says
Quote"Welded repairs to highly stressed components are not normally acceptable, other than where the component is made up of sections that are welded together. To pass, the repair should appear to be as strong as the original design."
Most subframes are made up of welded parts so could be repaired.
I thought 1970's Transits with the Pinto motor were quite reliable and simple vans, everyone knew where they were with a Transit, and they became a household name like Hoovers.with the way transits are going atm i don't think anyone will ever have to weld one up again, i'm not saying they don't rust they rust very well but the engines seem even better at going porous so theres no point in welding it, thinking about it if it gets to teh point you need to weld it youve done well
You can keep all your hi-tech b******
I'll stick with this!

probably cant afford to replace it ,or too wise to get sucked in with the pcp larkRusty cars are not a thing of the past - for years in our workshop we did very few corrosion repairs.
Now we are doing more and more - not as many as we did in the 1990's - but month on month we are doing more and more!

how did things get so bad?
Surely it can only be deliberate, built-in unreliability? They knew how to make good vans 50 yrs ago, and now everyone has these stupid and expensive problems! The more you think about it, the more it looks like they are openly taking the P out of the customers.
Despite emmision issues my iveco is rust free for the most. Underside and lowers are perfect. Dings to the upper panels have left me a few areas needing some attention but nothing terminalAnd the Mercedes Sprinter I had on rental had a horrid looking rust trap around the rear wheel arch/sill.
Ford don't seem to be doing well with engines these days. Ecoboost seem to be very problematic tooI thought 1970's Transits with the Pinto motor were quite reliable and simple vans, everyone knew where they were with a Transit, and they became a household name like Hoovers.

great cars had a avant quattro for yearsView attachment 203330 My 30 yr old Audi 100 has no rust, gets little maintenance but never breaks down or needs replacement parts, and will sit at 90 all day. In style! (Identical to the photo but a few battle scars.)
My 2005 BMW has horrible bubbling wheel arches, probably worse rust underneath, and needs fettling regularly. Progress, I think not.

Apparently they leak coolant. Overheat and pop.never had an ecoboost but know quite a few guys on the spanners and they refer to them as ecoboom so cant be a good thing
