My 2005 BMW has horrible bubbling wheel arches, probably worse rust underneath, and needs fettling regularly. Progress, I think not.

I think car manufacturers started using thinner gauge steel to make a lighter vehicle to improve fuel economy and also improved the rust proofing to suit but it seems to be going back to the old days.
Don't even talk to me about welding rusty vehicles!
2007 Ford Transit, Still not finished welding it
And when you've finished start from the beginning again.
No subframe welding now - anything that is part of the suspension - if it unbolts and can be replaced - cannot be welded for an MOT test.
One of the best cars I ever owned, front wheel bearing put up one he'll of a fight but that was all it needed in 4 years.View attachment 203330 My 30 yr old Audi 100 has no rust, gets little maintenance but never breaks down or needs replacement parts, and will sit at 90 all day.
