I'm guessing... I take it its the push-down T-handle then... push to engage, pull to disengage 4wd. Our older 390 had a 4wd system like that - used to have to tap one side brake whilst pulling to disengage it... but it was a fairly positive feel as it went in and out, and not really much to go wrong, unlike slightly newer tractors with 4wd braking and park systems.
Some brainless helpers don't really understand 4wd and leave it in, which is (generally) why the fronts are worn more than rears on some older tractors.
