On the weld tube channel they show also the jig to use these rods in the first shots of the videoWe used to make those....I think the max o/d coated was about 32mm....the core wire was 20mm I think.........they didnt use them like that though...they were on a frame with like a see saw arrangement....the operator stood a good 6 feet from the rod but they only ever welded straight down into a hole to repair things like ingot moulds.
Someone came in one day with some square cast rod.....some hardfacing alloy....and wanted us to coat it.....I told him the coating would crack on the corners and fall off....our MD insisted we try......it fell off
I think thats how the majority ended up.......I should have kept one for myself.....I used to have quite a collection of unusual stuff but I let someone borrow them to do a lecture, and, as usual, never got them back..I'd like to get one of those rods just to hang up in my workshop for show.
can you post a link....they might be our rods......I think we made them for HILTI but my memory is shrinking....I think it was in the 80s when we did itOn the weld tube channel they show also the jig to use these rods in the first shots of the video
And they said that is a process use to repair casting imperfections
I think that like for normal stick welding that is being replaced by MIG welding in production environment
Big stick welding is being replaced by submerged arc welding
But in both cases there are particular application where they can't be replaced
Just my thoughts
Anyway it's amazing to see a welding rod of this size

Watch better the video they show something like thatThe rig I saw was like a cantilever with the rod in one side and the man at the other
Oh yes....I didnt notice that........thats similar except the one I saw was also telescopic so it could be positioned without moving the footWatch better the video they show something like that
