Personally I think it was no bad thing the information was shared.The thing about MacCarthy, is he was partially right. You had people like Klaus Fuchs on the British side passing nuclear secrets directly to the Russians, the Rosenbergs, then the Cambridge spys, Kim Philby etc. I know MacCarthy was paranoid, but sometimes there were actually reds under the bed.
When war broke out the British government sent everything they knew to the Americans, who then promptly refused to return the favour.
