Question for the electricians, ( see diagram for the pictures worth a thousand words version )
Installing automatic gates for friends and while reading the instructions first ( yes, I know I've let us all down ) I noticed the following:
From the transformer, so 24V (ac), I can run 50m of 1.5mm cable to the control panel which in turn I can run 2 x 1.5mm cables to the gate motors ( 24V dc ) to a maximum distance of 10m. So phoned the sellers of the gate and said why only 10m control panel to gate ?
" it's due to the voltage drop over that distance "
But I say if I only have 1m between the transformer and controller and run the two cables 30m to the gates there would be less voltage drop yes ?
" no the motors would draw more current and over heat "
Am I misunderstanding that 1 x 24V ac 1.5mm cable running 30m is better than 2 x 24V dc 3.0mm cables running the same distance ?
Motors draw 60 watts ( 2.5 amps ) at start up then 48 watts ( 2 amps ) while running ( bearing in mind whole gate operation is open 16 seconds waits 20 seconds then closes 16 seconds )
Any thoughts ?
