You can never get enough processing power, I started in about 1985 or 1986, and back then our state of the art XT PC was about 8Mhz and turbo was about 10Mhz, (or it might have been 4.7 and 8mHz) I think, as it was a long time ago, anyway if you had 512KB or 640KB ram and 2 x 5.25" floppy you were doing well. Hard disk well they were 5MB or 10MB in size and cost a weeks wages. Since then it has been all about getting a reasonable performance out of computers, DOS 1.1 and a few years later Windows appeared, think it might have been v3.0 or something, trouble was every time the CPU's got better, the OS software got bigger, programs larger and more intensive dragging back any speed increases, being through all this, I think it is ingrained into most of us old guys that bigger, faster is much better, and again even with most recent CPU advances there have been additional problems, now half the programs running on the PC are, anti-virus, security, VPN's etc., everything that we need to stay safe on the internet but at a cost of speed again and that is even without doing something creative at the same time for the purpose we have one.
Even games are now getting gigantic, read the other day that one of the game programs can fill up a 512GB hard drive in it's installation. So at the end of the day, bigger and more powerful is better, if you don't require it then you will never notice all that extra processing power but if run some cpu intensive tasks or a large program and don't have the grunt then you really will.
So it is an never ending quest to achieve a decent PC to do what we want with it without being bogged down! At least that is what I tell the missus when I need to upgrade!
