Interesting you used 4 pads to rest the bed on until the p38 cured, Brian told me to use 3; 2 at the head and one at the tailstock end, to prevent twist.
My tailstock quill was OK, but the bore was bell-mouthed. So I line bored it and fitted Bronze bushes.

Really nice rebuild there, and strange coincidence but your quill may well have been to my house and back as when i ordered a new quill for my M250 600 group sent an MT5 quill as well which was a bit too big!
Should be well worth it in the end with a good as new lathe.
I liked the description of how you fitted the bed to the stand and the process with the P38.
I was wondering when @R-D-R was going to show up! I was going to recommend you checked out his M250 restoration thread!
Yes I did etch them and rinse before dipping in the passivating solution. Maybe I didn't leave them in long enough? I did wait until the acid started to fizzle before removing. I've plenty bits to plate on another project so I'll pactice on more lathe parts no doubt.Excellent job.
Did you etch the plated parts before passivating them?
I had similar problem with a Classic Plating kit where the instructions forgot to tell you to acid etch then clean in distilled water before dipping in the passivating solution.
It would be worth a call to Gateros.
Thanks Carl, hopefully my plating skills will improve with more practice.Looking really good Scott. Nice painting and good job with the plating too.
