The silly goats have put the 8 upside downLooks like a stud remover. Try an M8 bolt in it and see if it grips. The 8 has been stamped upside down by the looks of it too!
Looks like a stud extractor, the three rollers inside act on a cam when you rotate the tool and are forced inwards, gripping the stud.
Inside the 'socket' covered by the plate that is retained by the circlip. I could be wrong but it looks very similar to some I have.Where are the rollers?

Sold loads of them in a previous life. The Koken stuff is excellent but rare here
For engine studs, don’t they suggest new studs when you have the head off? So would make sense in that case.I was given a cheap set some years ago, they really like a shank on the stud to get a better grip as they muller the threads.
