I have a young friend (23) who's feeling a bit stuck in life a.t.m. as he doesn't feel like he's on a career path & doesn't see any opportunity to progress within his current job that he's been in for a few years (which involves lorries and he's generally passionate about vehicles) but he doesn't have any GCSEs or further education qualifications.
Long story short is I suggested that welding is something he could look into. He liked that idea a lot and I gave him a little lesson with MIG and stick but I know NOTHING about vehicles so don't really know how welding relates to vehicles other than a mechanic path welding some rusted body panel.
Obviously I'm not going to suggest that working at Red Bull on F1 cars is a realistic job prospect but within the motor trade in general how does welding relate? I'd like to at least be able to suggest something that he might find a little bit inspiring so he feels like there's opportunities. I've only really been able to tell him about welding from my own experience - light fabrication & artistic work - but I think motors is his passion/comfort zone.
Cheers for any help.
