There are expansions joints but they are further apart.
Rails are stretched to limit that expansion in hot countries but if we stretched them they could fail in the very cold weather.
I saw a chart once showing how much they elongated for every degree hotter. It was incredible.
Right...........the "new" longer rails are also helping keep Scunthorpe Steel open (lost track of the name) they can make rails that are twice as long as anyone else....so less joints....and as the "welds" are a bit primitive (still using thermit reaction) they are stronger without the welds. That's pretty much what the said on the BBC News. They were having trouble with the overhead wires, they are normally tensioned by pulleys, but the expansion was beyond the set limits, so they just got slack.
31° pah!
I saw 39 in the van coming home last night at 6.30pm!
I went through a rain storm and it dropped 10° in a mile!!!
Will never swim in Thames estuary again now I know what goes into itWe took our boat down to the Ray off Southend, spent most of the day on a sandbank in the estuary with a barby & swimming, quite warm. Then sailed home with the sea breeze behind us. Got to the mooring & packed the boat up just in time for the bar to open. Sat with friends on the balcony as the storm came up from the south. It was really weird most of it missed us to the east but the wind suddenly got up to gale force & it was like a blast from a hot furnace with a bit of rain. So we had another pint!
Oh I don't know, might put you on a high, read recently about the water sample from Westminster had a high content of the white stuff. Will never swim in Thames estuary again now I know what goes into it
