Where does the metal go then? it heats up and expands so the buckle must take the place of the joints. The joints were set with a gauge (different setting depending on temperature)to allow for expansion, guess that's out the window now, though I've seen somewhere that they stretch the rails before hand, or something like that.

I assume as it’s perhaps once a year we get these temperatures,whereas the continent experiences this more frequently,it’s outweighed by the benefits of continuous rail.The train tracks are buckling because of the heat, or possibly leaves on the line, according to the news. Why don't they have expansion joints anymore ?
