ExactlyBecause the companies passed the costs on to the customers.

Exactly
No point pitching up with no gear is there, what would us permanent employees use.Blimey what kind of rate are you paying for guys that bring their own welding equipment?
How do you charge for Labour?? Is it their hourly rate x two for each employee plus whatever materials ?? And the inflation was cause by the banking system not the workers. Also would not like to see a return of old school commie unions but there is a need for an organization to improve the status and pay of welders. Are you a professional welder or have you ever worked as one?Who then held THEIR employers to ransom etc etc. Result was the galloping inflation that all of us older ones remember all too clearly.
It is a simple calculation that union leaders are incapable of doing, preferring to believe in some sort of magic money tree. It took a really strong and clever woman to knock some sort of sense into their thick heads.
Because the japs and the Germans had the common sense to understand that if you couldn’t be arsed doing your job right, things would fall apart, and if they did then there’s a good chance the factory goes under.Don't recall many of the problems here, in Germany or Japan or their industries. Zero tolerance for nonsense.
Always get chancers unfortunately but one of the big problems in my area is agency’s paying low wages ..pay peanuts get monkeys ,i certainly wouldn’t be doing coded work for an agency for £10 an hour when i can work in a small fab shop locally and get maybe £12-14 mig welding ,it is frustrating working with people who cant do the job though

British leyland was an abortion, management that could see past their own brilliance and realise the cars they were telling everyone should be made weren’t the ones the public wanted; ruling over a lazy, unmotivated workforce more interested in walking out every 5 minutes on strike than maybe trying to build a decent car and building the companies profits that way. It’s The history of most of british industry in a nutshell. I’m no fan of Maggie, but at least she recognised that with the unions ruling as much as they did, nothing would ever get done in this country
Your examples are both very strong in trade union membership but nice try at making a legible point.Don't recall many of the problems here, in Germany or Japan or their industries. Zero tolerance for nonsense.

If you want to see the good & bad sides of unions, watch the film "Made in Dagenham", IMHO it's one of the best films ever made.
I worked there for two years in the 1980’s, not much had changed.
I’ll tell you more when I have five minutes...

sorry watched with interest here
but nowadays its dog eat dog world everyones greedy and in it for themselves and stuff everyone else
the unions had power to a degree something they abused at least in the past days if one union walked out they all walked out bringing the country to a halt
nowadays its one walks out your on your own with the other unions
everyones complaining about there low wages everythings going up and up but your wages arnt
at least with the unions the utilitys might not have been sold you wouldnt be flooded with foreign junk
the government might have put a levy on imports being brought into the country in tax that is so uk companys could compete with the junk being brought in cheap
the list goes on
however the peoples greed and selfishness and in it for themselves has cost them dearly no one knows if there jobs safe in this enviroment
It's not just your trade, agency plumbers are useless, I've had them come to sites without tools, never mind private houses
And the Mrs works in the NHS, all the agency staff are good for is sitting with patients who need 1 to 1 full time care, basically keep them out the way for the shift
My wife's experience too.
She worked all her working life in the NHS, bar a spell of child rearing; she retired at 65, now age 71 they've asked her to go back and work part time because they can't get qualified experienced staff to cover.
She'd confirm the agency staff are useless, she had advised her manager on no account to take on one individual permanently, only to see her advice ignored.
In her opinion, many new managers are no better.
Having committed all her life to the health service, the current situation there makes her very angry and frustrated.
Worked with a few so called Carpenters that didn't have a clue. They had a bit of paper that said they could. But thats like the old fashioned tradesmen, you put your 4 or 5 years in as an apprentice, learning on the job the hard way. But a lot of professions now are do a quick course, in a college, no or little contact with the real world, and then you get thrown in the deep end and you appear useless.
