Put the belt over the body of the chuck to get more rpm's?, quite often see stuff run from the flywheels on stationary engines instead of the pulley.
If you'd turned the whole table the engine was sitting on around 180 degrees so the pulley on the engine was facing the other way it would've been turning the right way driven off the lathe
