I’m getting near the end of overhauling my 1600 vw Aircooled, and am a bit frustrated by the pistons/ barrel dimensions,I’m now on my second new set, both from reputable manufacturers.
The crown is marked 85.45,yet measures 84.9,if I measure just above the skirt and 90 degrees to the gudgeon,it’s the only position I can get that dimension,is this ovality part of the design,to accommodate expansion and the pistons unequal structure?
I do remember ovality when rebuilding motorcycle engines, but that was so long ago, that I can’t remember if they were new or existing pistons.
Are there any regular rebuilders on here who can comment on my confusion?
