Sounds good mate. Be good to see. You've inspired me to sort mine out now, won't go to the same extent you are (I don't do paint ) but I'll get it back to working like it should.
I'll start a thread tomorrow if it looks like I'm getting somewhere.
I very interesting information. Mine has the dreaded backlash. I can see it even though I haven't removed the gears yet. Will definitely have to sort this. This is my 2G refurb if anyone's interested https://www.mig-welding.co.uk/forum/threads/progress-2g-drill.31600/ I had to do quite a bit of work on the dog clutch.
Gears look to be in good condition. I will be removing them in the next few daysBacklash isnt really a problem. It just clonks a bit if you forget to turn it back. At least your fibre gear is good!

Yes. Its bit of a design fault. All the dog clutches I have on different machines run a close tolerance. But I understand why they did it like that on the drill.. they could of reduced it a bit more.Absolutely, it's the (rubbish IMHO) design of the dog clutch. The reason the clutch gets damaged is because people don't turn the spindle back before starting in direct drive (high speed), there's nothing in the manual to warn you of this.
I had some nice thick angle iron. Couldn't find it... that lump of 40 was all I had to hand
