i need some bolts for the rear stub axles on my vw
the origenal bolts are 15mm head m8 10.9 strenght bolts and the heads are slim to reduce stickout so it doesnt catch the inside of the drum lip seal.
i went to vw and they wanted £1.70 per bolt which seemed rather steep so went to a bolt manufacturer and he sold me some button head bolts of the same dimensions as all the normal bolts he had the heads were too wide.
now i am worried that even though the tensile strength is the same are button head bolts really as strong as normal bolts? i am thinking difference between shear force and stretch force?
so out of paranoia i bit the bullet and bought the bolts from vw, would you believe it the new ones are 16mm heads with a captive washer not the same as the old ones.
vw told me these bolts superced the old ones so i thought well why not i will try them.
now these bolts on vws do have a washer behind them on the top bolts but the bottom bolts have a bracket instead that hooks around the handbrake cable and thus dont have a washer.
these new bolts with a captive washer will now be taller and do catch the lip seal on the drum
i phone vw and ask why this is the case and they said they have no idea and thats what vw recomend, as it happens they also couldnt tell me what torque to tighten them up to.
this leads me up to whether i just cut the captive washer off the required bolts, or can i use the button head bolts instead?
oh yeah before i forget the vw bolts are 10.9 the button head bolts are 010.9 what is the extra 0 for??
cheers
