Kent, I did test the cutter on a 2.8mm thick hook that I brought into the store with me as I had to see if it would dimple the jaws or not, passed easily, and quite easy to cut, unlike a couple of cutters I had tried before. I didn't try it out on the larger shark hooks as they are over $12 each and 3mmx5mm, however I probably won't use those again as they are a J hook and I would need to be targeting really, really big sharks (12ft+) with those hooks and my 50W reel would not be up to the task anyway if I hooked one, it has more than enough drag but it doesn't have enough line capacity. These bolt cutters are rated to cut up to 5mm piano wire so my hooks should not be problem for them.
If however I did use them and couldn't cut the hook I could always cut the stainless wire trace above the hook and release it that way, I don't use stainless hooks so these would corrode off quite quickly in the sharks jaw, but I prefer to remove the entire hook if possible.
Plus the from a safety point of view if I, or someone near me got a hook in a arm or leg, I wouldn't want to try and cut the hook with a cutter that was blunt or dimpled.
I didn't want to get a bolt cutter that the jaws would dimple after each cut and after a few cuts it would not be able to cut anything, sort of defeats it's purpose.
