Currently have been using an '01 BMW 320d
Fortunately, yesterday, I updated the spreadsheet.
Cost £2000, 5yrs ago @140000mi. Not a bargain but local and I was in a bit of a hurry.
Over those 5yrs it has cost me servicing (which I tend to do myself) tyres and a few bits and bobs and some electrical gubbins.
Doing ~6000mi per year, it's working out at almost exactly 30pence per mile and about £2000per year including fuel.
I intend to keep it as long as is viable. Depreciation costs are under £500 a year but hopefully less if I can keep it a while longer. I like a bigish estate car because my journeys often include long motorways with a bunch of stuff. My partner has an '01 peugeot 206 and the numbers are very similar.
Going forward, I'd like to replace the 206. It mostly does short trips to work so would like to consider an electric leaf but they are still a tad pricy. Currently like the Audi A2.
In your situation, if you're mostly pottering, you could consider a "classic" something that will hold value and be able to qualify for cheap insurance. Probably not worth it unless it can be garaged though. I used to run a classic VW beetle as my only car, general costs were low, and 40-45mpg but comfort, safety & speed all lacked.
