To the great wealth of knowledge present on this site, I present this problem I've had this last week.
In short:
Marinised Kubota 4 cylinder 4 stroke, diesel. 2.2 l 50 hp.
Good strong reliable engines limited to 2000 rpm.
8 ton grp (fiberglass) boat, 11.8 m long.
Engine 15 years old, 8000 hours. No probs till last tuesday.
Tuesday, my day off, boss phones ,'looks like you've a head gasket tommorow'....
Following day.
I turn up, deal with clients on said boat. Start engine, thinking, will it start?
Starts perfectly, and emptied the contents of its internal cooling system in the bilge.
I displace clients. Dismantle cylinder head, and on the head gasket find no clear traces of a failed head gasket.
New head gasket arrives following morning, by 2pm I fire up the engine and for forty seconds it runs perfectly. Then theirs a change in the engine sound, and it dumps 4 litres of coolant in the bilge.
So, I assume the head or block is dead, and find a replacement....
BUT, my mate, who is a 40 year in the job, marine mechanic, reckons, the bees nest, heat exchanger, is blowing the sea or raw water pump pressure, back through the heat exchanger, to expel all the coolant?
What do you think?
I do apologise if I've not made this too clear.
Just to add, the engine has never overheated, as such, and when they do the paint changes colour.
And I've changed the engine anyway, but i id be dead miffed, if it was just the heat exchanger.
Any way the engines back in the workshop this eve. Seems unlikely a probably small crack in the heat exchanger would do that, seeing as it's peeing well,( wet exhaust).
Thanks folks.....
