Hi Guys,
I've been mig welding for many years on and off restoring classic cars as a hobby. All this time I've used an old fashioned fixed shade helmet. I've had a few very brief flashes but never experienced any ill effect. I do take safety seriously and since my old helmet has mysteriously disappeared I'm thinking of getting an auto darkening one. I did try someone else's auto helmet some years ago but didn't like it much, I can't remember why. I think clarity was the issue.
I'm not keen to pay a lot of money for something I'd only use infrequently but at the same time would not want to compromise on safety. Can anyone recommend a minimum acceptable darkening time? The helmet will be used with Mig and occasional Tig.
Also can anyone recommend a helmet for under 100 and ideally round the 50 pound mark that would be best value for money?
I'm not sure how important solar power is considered. Are batteries a problem? What are the main points to consider?
Your comments appreciated.
Gus.
