I had a play this afternoon with my new Parweld 142. I wanted to have a go at welding some thick material to see what it could do. I had a couple of plates of 10mm mild steel knocking about so I chamfered them on the edge and cleaned them up. I have watched a bunch of vids on YouTube to get an idea of multiple passes. But never done it before. I had a play with an old ac welder 25yrs ago but only ever done mig ever since.
So first pass was an epic fail
I tried sitting it on a tile to hold it flat so it mostly just dropped through. Then I rectified it with a plate tacked on and carried on. There are 6 or 7 runs on it. I was running 3.2 6013 at about 120A and the welder didn't even feel like it was trying.
Advice gratefully received, I know the fundamental issue was the first pass with nothing behind. I don't think it was too bad after that. I tend to be welding up brackets and things so won't be doing anything huge but nice to think I can penetrate stuff that thick.
